I've been around since 1950. Many customs and activities that used to be normal and common place while I was growing up have been forgotten. Forgotten by myself and other peope my age and older, though the number of people older than me is decreasing rapidly.
I remember getting sick and a few hours later a doctor showing up at our house. That was as recently as 1963, or thereabouts. In the small town of Pocahontas, AR were we lived at the time. I remember when there was a grocery store, a small one, on nearly every block. It would be small and a part of a house. A converted living room or garage. They were all over town when we moved there in 1958. The name of the store would be the surname of the owner, Holts Grocery, Spikes Grocery, Starlings Grocery, etc. Most of them were gone by the mid-sixties. Larger stores took there place. And more people could afford cars. There were no franchise grocery stores there until 1964 when IGA arrived, if I recall correctly.
